Serge Vanden Berghe

Serge Vanden BergheSerge Vandenberghe, French-speaking Belgian by birth, has been living in Ireland since 1992 and is a self-taught artist.  He started painting in 1989, after years of political activism in the European peace movement, and has been producing work since. With a background in silk painting, Serge’s work has evolved to include painting, sculpture, music, performance and poetry in his native French.

Serge feels that his art comes to life in informal, non-gallery settings that dissolve the boundaries between the viewer and the viewed.  Music, performance and community arts projects fuel his drive for collaborative expression, but he values his individual studio work equally.

As a Belgian, Serge has been greatly influenced by surrealists.  After long abstract spells he regularly goes back to depicting more realistic worlds, where wide-open spaces form a perfect background to visual surrealist poetry.
